Elementary English as a Additional Language (EAL) Teacher

Reports to: Elementary School Principal

Contract: Full-time

Hours: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

JOB OVERVIEW

The ISD Elementary School EAL Teacher will practice consistent and ongoing collaboration with grade-level team members across two grade levels. The EAL teacher will contribute to the design, implementation, assessment, and reflection processes involved with the required number of grade-level unit planners.  EAL teachers must consider and plan for how EAL students will access the content of the PYP curriculum.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Classroom planning instruction based on established goals and targeted interventions. Design plan of support, which includes accommodations, modifications, and interventions.
  • Working with the classroom teachers and EAL team to overcome logistical challenges when providing interventions, modifications, and accommodations.
  • Attend grade-level planning meetings each cycle to ensure the EAL Teacher supports learning within the units of inquiry.
  • Review data from school-wide assessments such as MAP, track data, and provide targeted intervention to address deficits in learning and to improve instruction based on analysis.  Progress monitoring the interventions and adjust accordingly
  • Administer WIDA assessments and review data to assess student progress and needs
  • Seeking professional development, reading professionally, and engaging in action research
  • Being available to students on a regular basis after school for questions, extra tutoring, and supplemental instruction.
  • Participating in the screening of new applicants, administering assessments, and providing feedback to the Enrollment team
  • Providing both push-in and pull-out instruction for  EAL students. 
  • Participate in ongoing dialogue with the Student Support Team and homeroom teachers regarding student progress.

INQUIRY

In order to develop lifelong learners with strong questioning skills, the EAL teacher will model and practice the Inquiry Process. Evidence of inquiry will pervade throughout the EAL teacher’s classroom practices and room design. 

THE LEARNER PROFILE

The EAL teacher will have the Learner Profile posted in the classroom and refer to it regularly by connecting attributes to each given Unit of Inquiry. The Learner Profile and its accompanying Attitudes will serve as the school’s vernacular for academic, social, and personal reflection. The Profile represents the outcome of all our academic and social endeavors at ISD.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION/REPORTING

The EAL teacher must participate in the screening process at the start of the school year and throughout the school year.  They are required to evaluate students, monitor growth through progress monitoring, and report student progress according to the ISD Assessment Policy.  

ENGAGEMENT/COMMUNITY

The EAL teacher should be well-versed in positive classroom management and should inspire high levels of student engagement. All ISD teachers are encouraged to share their work, photos, and celebrations with our Communications Coordinator so that it can be seen community-wide.

All ISD teachers must participate in the After-School Activities Program.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's Degree is required.
  • A master's Degree in Education or a related field is preferred
  • Teaching certificate in English Language Learning
  • Minimum 2 years of experience supporting secondary school-aged learners
  • Sensitivity and understanding building good relationships with children and teenagers
  • Excellent verbal communication skills for motivating children to learn 
  • Active listening skills to understand the children's needs
  • Model and support the development of English for our students 
  • Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
